It’s no secret that the islands of the Florida Keys offer world-renowned saltwater fishing opportunities. One of the most popular gamefish that inhabits the offshore waters of the Florida Keys is the mahi mahi or dolphinfish.

Mahi mahi are known for their acrobatic displays when hooked and their fillets make a tasty meal when cooked on the grill or used to make a fish sandwich. If you decide to go fishing for mahi mahi in the Florida Keys, check out five tips can contribute to a successful experience.

When to Fish for Mahi Mahi

In the Florida Keys, the best time of year for mahi mahi fishing typically runs from late spring through the fall season (May through October). During these months, the warm Atlantic waters, strong currents (such as the Gulfstream Current), and abundance of baitfish create optimal conditions for targeting these colorful saltwater sportfish, often bringing them closer to shore on their migration route.

Finding the Gulfstream Current

Fishing for mahi mahi in the Florida Keys is combination of strategic planning and preparation. For starters, check the National Weather Service Marine Forecast to find out where the approximate shoreward edge of the Gulfstream Current is located. The best spots to find mahi are typically near the edge of the Gulfstream Current. Once you get out to the Gulfstream, pay close attention to any diving birds, floating debris, or Sargassum weed lines. These signs often mean there are baitfish nearby and, in turn, schools of actively feeding gamefish.

Offshore Techniques to Use

One popular method for targeting mahi mahi is by using trolling lures or rigged ballyhoo. Skirted lures in blue and white or orange and green colors are trolled behind the boat at speeds between about 5 and 7 knots. Use 6-foot stand up fishing rod and conventional reel in the 30 to 50 pound class. Rig the lures to your main lines using about 6 feet of 70 to 80-pound fluorocarbon leader material. Mahi mahi are known for their strength and stamina, so they put up a fierce fight that can challenge even the most experienced anglers.

Conservation and Respect for the Ocean

While the thrill of catching mahi is often a major draw to the Florida Keys, responsible fishing practices are essential to ensure the sustainability of fish populations and the health of the Keys fishery. Always check the current Florida saltwater fishing regulations so that you know the mahi mahi fishing gear requirements, minimum size limits, and bag limits.

Cooking Your Catch

There’s no better way to wrap up a successful day of saltwater fishing in the Florida Keys than by cooking up your catch. Mahi mahi is a favorite for grilling, baking, frying, or even preparing as ceviche. To cook mahi on the grill, use medium-high heat (450 degrees and lightly oil the grate. Grill until golden on the outside and the fish flakes easily with a fork, about 4 to 5 minutes per side.
