If you’re looking to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month this year, the water offers plenty of opportunities to pay tribute to the Hispanic culture. Find out how.
Every year, from September 15 to October 15, the nation recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month. During this month-long event, there are lots of ways anglers and non-anglers alike can join in the celebration.
What is the Purpose of Hispanic Heritage Month?
What started in the 1960s as a week-long celebration, Hispanic Heritage Month now runs from September 15 to October 15 every year to coincide with the Independence Day of several Latin American countries. But if you’re not familiar with the annual event, you may wonder: just what does Hispanic Heritage Month celebrate?
The annual 30-day event honors the cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central, and South America.
During the month-long celebration, Americans are encouraged to pay tribute to these citizens’ role throughout our country’s history and their influence on American society by taking part in ceremonies and activities.
Hispanic Heritage Month Ideas
If you’re interested in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month this fall, there are plenty of ways to join in the observance and honor the culture of Hispanic Americans in our country. Here are some ideas to try.
1. Find a Fishing Spot Near You:
Fishing and enjoying the great natural resources available to us are part of the tradition of the Hispanic American community, past and present. With 45% of Hispanic anglers saying fishing and boating are part of their cultural heritage, it’s no surprise that a record number of 4.4 million Hispanics went fishing last year. Take the opportunity this Hispanic Heritage Month to spend a day on the water and join in honoring this important component of Hispanic culture. If you haven’t ventured out before, start by finding an ideal spot near you by talking to bait and tackle shop owners, other anglers, or your state’s fish and wildlife department.
2. Try a Classic Latin American Seafood Dish:
Whether you bring your catch home after a day on the water or stop at the local fish market, you have unlimited opportunities during Hispanic Heritage Month to enjoy seafood, an essential component of a traditional Latin American diet. From a simple baked or grilled white fish to fish tacos, ceviche, or seafood paella, turn your tasty catch into a classic Latin American dish this month and pay tribute to the important role of the water and fish in the cultural identity of Hispanics.
3. Support a Hispanic Commercial Angler:
An increasing number of commercial anglers today are also fishing guides. Over 10% of guides are of Hispanic or Latino ethnicity. If you’re looking to book a trip, check out one of several resources available to you that can help you find Hispanic businesses. One such business directory is Support Latinx Businesses. Once you compile a shortlist of potential guides, do your research. Read reviews online or ask friends or family members if they’ve fished with the guide. And find out the specific rules for your trip like what happens to your catch and what equipment they have available to you on the boat to find the best fit.
