Looking to take your kids fishing? We created a detailed list of the items you need to have a great day on the water.
The wonderful world of fishing takes a bit of navigating. When it comes to getting into fishing with your kids, it definitely helps to have a roadmap! Here are a few simple items to consider when taking your kids fishing.
The Ultimate Gear List for Fishing with Kids
Sunblock and a Hat
Get a cute little kiddie fisherman's hat! You can decorate it with your kids to help them make it their own.
Life Vest
This is essential for boating and docks, because kids have been known to topple into the water. Even riverside, currents can sweep children away quickly.
Snacks
We love to bring gummy worms and fish crackers.
Fishing License (for adults and kids, depending on the area)
Different ages require different licenses in each state, but most can easily be bought online. Look up the rules for your area to determine what you need to fish legally with kids.
Tackle Box (with fun stuff like kiddie bait)
Make sure you have the right kind of bait for fish in your area. Chatting with experts at your local outdoor shop is a good way to accomplish this.
Kid Pole
A giant pole won’t make for an enjoyable experience for a young child. Make sure you get a kids fishing pole that is the right size for them.
Cooler
Get a cooler that’s small and easy to carry along with the other gear needed for kids. Ideally, you’ll want to be able to fit it in a small boat. We’re not usually catching a TON of fish with kids, so light and compact is ideal.
WIth a little planning and the right expectations, fishing with kids can be a ton of fun. Just remember, fishing with kids is meant to be an enjoyable experience that helps them get into the habit of getting out there. Have fun!
