6 Fun Things To Do On Weekends In The Fall

Autumn is best experienced outdoors! Check out these 6 fall outdoor activities to do with kids, from writing your own alphabet book to making a labyrinth of leaves!

School is back in session, and even if that’s happening on camera at home instead of in a classroom, families need fun things to do on weekends to add a bit of (autumn) spice to family life! Here are six fall outdoor activities for families to enjoy.

Apple Picking

Of all the fun things to do on weekends with your kids, nothing’s as crisp and delicious as apple picking. You’ll walk along rows of trees, reach up to select the best of the bunch, and pose for adorable photos with your kiddos. Bonus: Peeling apples and making homemade applesauce could become your new favorite fall family tradition.

Make A Leaf Labyrinth

Sure, you can (and should) rake leaves into a pile for kids to jump into, but consider upping your leaf game this fall by designing a winding, circular labyrinth out of those crunchy leaves. Making your way through a labyrinth made of colorful leaves is one of the coolest fall outdoor activities to do with your kids.

Jack-be-Little Pumpkin Painting

One of the cutest fun things to do on weekends each fall is made even cuter by shifting your pumpkin painting focus to tiny jack-be-littles. These palm-sized orange and white pumpkins tend to be more affordable than their larger brethren and it’s awesome to transform them into, say, the five members of One Direction or your toddler’s favorite cartoon charac-ters! Weekend fun isn’t just for boy bands and kid’s cartoons though. If you’re looking for fun fall outdoor activities for adults, paint each pumpkin to look like the apps on your phone’s home screen and then arrange them to mirror your de-vice. Now that’s Instagram worthy!

Backyard Campout

Sticky evening humidity has been replaced with a coolness, and your breath is now visible as you and your kids huddle together in a tent in your backyard with flashlights, reading comics and telling spooky stories. In lieu of an outdoor week-end getaway, family campouts can be one of the most fun things to do on weekends in the fall.

Write An Outdoor Autumn Alphabet Book

Finding corresponding things for all 26 letters equates to plenty of time spent outside in the crisp autumnal air enjoying one of the more low-key fun things to do with kids on weekends. Starting with just a note pad, wander about with your little one(s) and find acorns (‘A’), leaves (‘L’), and pinecones (‘P’). Soon enough, you’ll have enough material to create your own outdoor autumn alphabet book together by folding 13 pieces of paper in half, then using crayons to draw and color the items from A-Z.

Construct a Pinecone Bird Feeder

Gather up handfuls of fallen pinecones, and tie string, yarn or ribbon to hang them later. With a butter knife or wooden popsicle sticks, smear loads of peanut butter all around each pinecone and into its crevasses, then roll the sticky cones around in shallow trays or plates filled with birdseed. Your pinecone bird feeders will help ensure your avian friends will have food to eat well into wintertime. *pinecone bird feeders can easily be nut-allergy free by using vegetable shortening instead of peanut butter!

Now, in addition to fall fishing, you have fun fall outdoor activities ready for when your kids simply cannot be contained by four walls any longer!
