In his recent trip to Pryor, Oklahoma Dave Chanda learned how to Paddlefish with the staff from Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and heard many success stories about how they manage Paddlefish in this state.
Paddlefish are one of the most unique fish in Oklahoma. The Paddlefish Research Center has been established by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation to collect important biological data to manage this species. Anglers can bring their fish to this center, the staff cleans them for free, fillet it and return it in vacuum sealed bags. The research staff then collects information such as the location of catch, sex, weight, length and other essential biological data.
They also collect the eggs which are processed into caviar. Funds drive from the sell of the caviar go right back into Paddlefish management and help ensure the success of this valuable fisheries research in Oklahoma.
Fishing tips on How to Fish Paddlefish:
- The fishing technique to catch them is to cast out into the water and allow the hook to sink to the bottom.
- Then retrieve the hook in a sweeping motion, hoping to catch a fish.
- Slowly reel in the Paddlefish and land the fish into the boat.
