When I think about some of the amazing female anglers I’ve connected with over the past few years, my heart overflows with serious gratitude. There are so many accomplished women in fishing who continue to inspire me regardless of how long I’ve been involved in the sport.
In fact, the situation had me reflecting on a quote I once read that was something along the lines of, “when you see something beautiful in someone, tell them.” Well, what better time to share than on International Women’s Day?
To my fellow women anglers and Wave Makers, I know how hard you’ve worked to overcome stereotypes, bias, and judgement in the process of forging your well-earned places in our industry. To know that your voices are being heard and be a witness to your achievements is beautiful to me.
Advice to Consider on International Women’s Day and Every Day
If you haven’t connected with a group of female anglers in your local area yet, I hope the following words of wisdom from these accomplished women in fishing will encourage you to do so.
• “Every cast takes me back to the most blissful memories growing up with my family. That feeling I wish I could bottle up and give to the next generation, before social media was a thing. That is what’s important to me, advocating for the outdoors the best I can and preserving our waters for future generations.” --Cindy (Sid) Nguyen (Saltwater Angler, Columbia Sportswear Partner)
• “The most sincere form of beauty I’ve experienced yet is when women join up for adventures outdoors. We do it uniquely, we do it our way. That is powerful. --Ashley Nichole Lewis (Historian, Professional Angler, Environmentalist)
• “Nature is a precious resource. Resources are meant to be shared amongst others, so don’t be afraid to ask for help if you don’t know something. The power of community will help you grow while making your journey exciting.” --Snookie Risch (Social Media Professional, Freshwater Angler, Vibe Kayaks Pro Staff)
• “Let your passion lead you. Seek out strong female role models and supportive fishing communities. Take every failure as a lesson. Find your confidence when you need it most and force it to be stronger than your fears. Lastly, don’t be afraid to dream big.” –Gabriella MaGrath (Outdoor Writer, Offshore Angler)
• I cast my line like my ancestors before me, reeling in strength, wisdom, and the power to provide. These waters are mine to claim, my story to tell. I fish, I rise, I thrive. You don’t have to prove yourself to anyone – your love for fishing is ENOUGH. Go ahead and ask questions, share your experiences, and don’t be afraid to speak up in conversations. Your perspective is valuable. --Jeanine Tipler (Avid Angler, Founder of Fishanistas)
• When it comes to fishing, there is no right or wrong way to start. You don’t have to be perfect. Whether you are new to fishing, a novice, or an avid angler, be willing to try and have confidence. There is always a new technique and I learn something from almost every angler I meet. Also, it’s ok to take time for yourself to fish. I had feelings of guilt or anxiety for making time to fish, but it’s what I love and it’s good for my soul. It makes me better. --BeBe Harrison (Saltwater Angler, Founder of Angling Women)
I remember a time when we didn’t have many fishing communities for women, it was hard to find fishing programs for women, and we didn’t hear many inspiring stories of female anglers being shared. Thankfully, that time has passed.
I hope you’ll follow these women, learn about their individual stories, acknowledge the work they’ve put in to break through barriers that stood before them, and witness the many ways they’ve earned respect.
