The U.S. Coast Guard is one branch of the armed forces, providing law enforcement and protection for our country from threats in and around the sea. They are also a vital resource for search and rescue, conducting about forty such missions and rescuing an average of a dozen people each day.

So when is National Coast Guard Day celebrated in 2024? August 4th is National Coast Guard Day, recognizing the day in 1790, when the first ten vessels were approved. While researching the U.S. Coast Guard, it seems that this date is mainly recognized within the organization, however, there are ways that you can celebrate National Coast Guard Day.

For example, the Coast Guard Museum is located in New London, Connecticut, which is south of Boston and north of New York City. Admission is free but it is only open September through May. There are other Coast Guard educational resources from multiple stations and units, serving the Pacific and Atlantic, as well as the Great Lakes. If you are wondering how to find a Coast Guard open house near me, visit www.uscg.mil to locate options within the various districts. Once that decision is made, look up each unit you would like to visit. You will find helpful dates on a possible Coast Guard open house as well as educational resources about the Coast Guard for kids online such as manuscripts, photographs, and locations of monuments and memorials to visit all around the world.

The Annapolis, Maryland open house in October of 2023, provided tours of the facility and discussed operations and safe boating tips. However if you are looking for National Coast Guard Day activities for families, Grand Haven, Michigan will host a week-long festival, July 26-August 4th, 2024 that will include bands and fireworks to help honor those serving.

So, on August 4th, National Coast Guard Day, thank any former or actively serving members of the Coast Guard Armed Forces or Coast Guard Auxiliary. Let them know that we are grateful for providing big water rescues, safety, and security.
