Double turle knot instructions for tying one of the more secure fly fishing knots to attach your fly to your tippet. Follow these easy steps to learn how

If you've been studying up on knots to use when fly fishing, you may have heard about the Turle knot and the double Turle knot. The Turle knot and double Turle knot are fly fishing knots that are used to attach flies to tippet.

According to H. Cholmondeley-Pennell in his 1886 edition of Modern Improvements in Fishing Tackle and Fish Hooks, the original Turle knot was developed by Major William Greer Turle. In his later years, Major Turle became quite fond of fly fishing.

While most anglers tie this knot for fly fishing purposes, you can also use the Turle knot for fishing with spinning gear. This knot can be used when attaching a hook or lure to your leader.

There is an advantage if you use and follow these double Turle knot instructions because the double Turle is a stronger and more secure knot than the original Turle.

Step-By-Step Double Turle Knot Instructions

  1. Pass the tag end through the eye of the hook.
  2. Make two large loops, and then tie an overhand knot around these loops.
  3. Pass both loops over the fly or hook.
  4. Tuck the tag end under the two loops.
  5. Tighten the loops and the knot.
  6. Trim the tag end.

As with any other type of fishing knot, you may need to practice tying the double Turle knot a few times. When the weather isn't conducive for fishing, you can use your time to practice knots like these or renew your fishing license online.
