How to stay active and how to safely enjoy outdoor activities like boating and fishing while practicing social distancing.
Outdoor activities such as boating and fishing bring families, friends and communities together. Now more than ever, coming together and staying active are critical, but also more challenging.
Above all else, the health and wellbeing of you and your family is the top priority. The spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and increased time at home has led to questions about how to stay active and how to safely enjoy outdoor activities such as boating and fishing.
Guidelines from the CDC and state and local departments of health are rapidly changing in response to this issue. While outdoor activities are still encouraged in many areas, a growing number of states have issued Shelter-in-Place or Stay-at-Home orders which may mean access to the water is discouraged or prohibited.
No matter what situation you’re in, you can still learn how to stay active while social distancing.
If staying home:
- Make use of your yard or whatever outdoor space you have. Even a tiny porch can offer an escape, fresh air, and sunlight.
- Move your body every chance you get. Turn up your music and dance. Follow a short workout video. Walk around while taking conference calls. Endorphins provide an instant mood booster and health benefits.
- Keep your brain active. It can be tempting to scroll social media all day, but try things that challenge your mind such as crosswords or puzzles.
If enjoying the outdoors responsibly:
- Always consider your health and wellbeing as well as that of others and follow your local, state and CDC guidelines for the most updated information.
- Try solo activities like kayaking or fishing in remote areas or places that allow you to maintain a 6-foot or greater distance from others.
Now that you know how to stay active while social distancing, be sure you review your state and local safety guidelines to keep everyone safe and healthy.
