OREGON FISHING LICENSES REQUIREMENTS

Before you can drop your line in one of the state’s top fishing spots, you’ll need to get your Oregon fishing license if you’re 12 years or older. An Oregon Angling License allows you to take, or help another angle for or take, any fish for personal use. You’ll need to have your license in your possession, either a traditional paper version or electronic, so you can show it if requested by law enforcement or the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife staff.

In addition, all anglers, no matter how old, need to have a valid Combined Angling Tag to fish for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon or halibut. Everyone, regardless of age, also needs to have a Columbia River Basic Endorsement if you plan to angle for salmon, steelhead or sturgeon in part of the Columbia River.

OREGON FISHING LICENSE EXEMPTIONS

There are certain circumstances in which an Oregon fishing license isn’t required. The exceptions to the rule apply to those who:

• Fish during the state’s free fishing weekend(s)
• Take crayfish or bullfrogs
• Are resident landowners angling on their land, except when fishing for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon or halibut
• Are residents fishing on land owned by an immediate family member except when angling for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon or halibut

A resident to obtain an Oregon fishing license is someone who has resided in Oregon for at least six months before applying for a license.

Also remember that, depending on where and what you plan to fish, both residents and non-residents may also need to purchase a tag or permit. The Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife website lists all the additional applications you may need.

WHERE TO BUY YOUR FISHING LICENSE

To buy your Oregon fishing license, you have several options:

• Electronic: You can visit myodfw.com. This website will give you the option to purchase a license. You can also get the MYODFW App and use your smartphone to purchase an electronic Oregon fishing license or you can choose the traditional paper option and print it at home.
• ODFW office
• At a licensed vendor

State and federal laws require a Social Security number to obtain most licenses.
