With hundreds of miles of coastline and plentiful lakes, creeks and rivers, there are an abundance of opportunities for fly fishing in Southern California. Here are some of the spots known for productive fly fishing in the area.

Kern River

Located in the middle of the Sequoia National Forest, this is a great spot for trout fishing in Southern California since the river is heavily stocked with rainbow trout. Be aware that this river is also known for white water rafters to make sure you’re well equipped to tackle it safely.

Deep Creek

Located near the San Bernardino Mountains, this stream has been designated as a wild trout stream by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Anglers will find both rainbow and brown trout here. But what makes the fishing even more appealing are the incredible views. Just be prepared to hike along the Pacific Crest Trail to access the creek.

Carpinteria State Beach

Near Santa Barbara, this mile-long coastal beach gives you a chance to try fly fishing from the surf. Here you can find plenty of perch as well as other species like guitarfish and croakers. Just remember that you’ll want to head out early to avoid beachgoers.

Los Angeles River

If you’re looking for a proven spot for fly fishing near Los Angeles, head to the Los Angeles River, which makes its way right through downtown. While you won’t find trout, the carp in the murky waters make for a unique urban fishing opportunity.

West Fork San Gabriel River

This productive stream is popular among locals in Los Angeles County. Open year round, the river used to be stocked with rainbow trout but the efforts were stopped to try to protect an endangered frog species. However, you’ll still find wild trout here along with carp, bass and panfish.

Lake Cuyamaca

This 110-acre lake about an hour’s drive from San Diego in Cleveland National Forest is stocked year round with tens of thousands of pounds of rainbow trout. You’ll also have your chance at catching species like bass, channel catfish, crappie, and bluegill at this favorite Southern California fishing lake.

Owens River

Large numbers of rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout make the Upper Owens River one of the best for trout fisheries in Southern California year round and a favorite fly fishing spot. Whether you cast from the bank or wade, the lack of vegetation around the river making casting a little easier here.

Southern California Fly Fishing Regulations

When fly fishing in Southern California, you’ll want to become familiar with all area regulations. The state requires that everyone 16 and older have a valid fishing license. Some areas also require a permit. And there are other rules in effect in some common fly fishing spots.

For example, in certain waters in Deep Creek, you can only use artificial lures with barbless hooks, and you’re limited to two trout a day. In Kern River, there are different open seasons depending on where you’re fishing as well as varying bag and possession limits. So be sure to review the list of waters with special fishing regulations before you head out.
