We have all heard the term “Doggie Paddle”, but believe it or not, all dogs do not know how to swim. Even if your dog can swim, he may still tire out after a while or get into trouble. When taking your dog with you on the boat, they should be equipped with a life jacket just like the rest of your passengers. Learn how to fit your pet for a life jacket in case you should have an unexpected event of “doggie overboard”.

There are 2 measurements that you will need to properly fit your dog for a life jacket; the girth of your dog and his or her length from neck to tail. Be wary of some life jackets that only ask the length because not all dogs will have the same girth. (We should all know that as humans!) When taking these measurements, be sure your dog is in the standing position so you receive accurate measurements to start shopping.  These life vests are made for all size dogs and have a variety of features like bright coloring, reflective strips, a grab handle for easy rescuing, adjustable straps, user reviews, and proper sizing information. Some jackets may also be equipped with a breathable mesh under the belly to provide better comfort, especially during hot days.

Before setting sail with your four legged companion, make sure you have tried the life vest on, and it is a comfortable fit. Some pets will not like being in a life vest, but you may try putting the vest on your dog before taking a walk or going for a car ride. This should help your dog start thinking he’s going somewhere fun when he puts on his vest! Also, try a float test with your dog while still on shore to test the efficiency and see how your pet will react if he does go overboard.

There are many sites available online to purchase doggy life jackets from! Here is one site we have had luck with: http://www.pawsaboard.com/dog-lifejacket-pet-life-jacket.asp
